Walking Tips...
- Be Safe!
- Observe all traffic laws.
- Be watchful for walking hazards.
- Walk with a buddy or tell someone where you are going. Carry a cell phone.
- Drink your water. Bring a snack.
- Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes.
- Dress in layers. Wear a hat.
- Stand up straight! Swing your arms and breath deeply!
- First, warm up slowly for 5 minutes.
- Cool down at the end of your walk.
- Stretching helps prevent sore muscles and cramps.
- Don't over-do it! Allow your body to adjust to the new activity.
- Consult your physician before beginning any physical activity.
Hiking Tips...
- Be Safe!
- Hike with others and tell someone where you will be going. Carry a cell phone.
- Have a map and plan your hike. Obtain permits if necessary.
- Check the weather report and pack accordingly. Your pack should not exceed one third of your body weight.
- Dress in layers, bring a jacket and a sun hat.
- Choose appropriate footwear: solid, lightweight and supportive. Shoes should fit your feet well.
- Carry enough water and emergency supplies.
- Comply with all signs. Respect barriers and the rights of others.
- Stay on the trail (even if its narrow, rough or muddy) to avoid damage and erosion to wilderness.
- If there are is no trail, spread out to disperse impact on wilderness.
- Do not disturb historical, archaeological, or paleontological sites.
- Use caution when encountering wildlife, horses and dogs. Control your own animals, bring a sack to pick up and pack out their waste.
- If you must “go”, dig a hole at least six inches deep and two hundred feet away from water sources, campsites or trails, and bury when you have finished your business.
- Pack out everything you bring, don't leave any trash behind.
